Background of the Study
Inclusive education seeks to provide equitable learning opportunities for all students, including those with disabilities. In Ikom Local Government Area, Cross River State, implementing inclusive education poses significant challenges that affect the educational attainment of children with disabilities (Udoh, 2023). Despite policy frameworks aimed at promoting inclusion, barriers such as inadequate facilities, limited specialized resources, and insufficient teacher training continue to hinder effective implementation (Okon, 2024). Research indicates that when schools fail to accommodate diverse learning needs, children with disabilities are at risk of marginalization, resulting in lower academic performance and social isolation (Ndem, 2025). This study examines the multifaceted challenges associated with inclusive education and evaluates the extent to which these obstacles affect the learning experiences of children with disabilities. The findings are intended to inform strategies for improving the implementation of inclusive practices and ensuring that all children receive quality education in a supportive environment.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the adoption of inclusive education policies, children with disabilities in Ikom face significant challenges that impede their academic progress. Inadequate infrastructure, insufficient training for educators, and a lack of tailored learning materials contribute to a substandard educational experience (Udoh, 2023). These limitations hinder effective inclusion and exacerbate disparities in educational outcomes. There is a critical need to assess these challenges systematically to provide recommendations that can improve the learning environment for children with disabilities.
Objectives of the Study:
To identify the challenges in implementing inclusive education.
To assess the impact of these challenges on the academic achievement of children with disabilities.
To propose recommendations for improving inclusive education practices.
Research Questions:
What are the main challenges of implementing inclusive education?
How do these challenges affect children with disabilities academically?
What strategies can enhance the effectiveness of inclusive education?
Research Hypotheses:
Inadequate facilities negatively impact inclusive education.
Insufficient teacher training correlates with lower academic achievement among children with disabilities.
Policy improvements can significantly enhance inclusive education practices.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it addresses the critical challenges of inclusive education for children with disabilities. The findings will help educators, administrators, and policymakers design more effective interventions that promote equity and improve learning outcomes. By identifying key obstacles and proposing solutions, the research contributes to creating a more inclusive and supportive educational environment for all children.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the challenges of implementing inclusive education for children with disabilities in Ikom Local Government Area, Cross River State. It does not extend to other regions or additional student groups.
Definitions of Terms:
Inclusive Education: An approach that integrates children with disabilities into mainstream educational settings.
